I just finished Psych House, so my thoughts on this should be fairly fresh.
Psych House is a Shonen Jump title that just capped out at 17 chapters. I’m sad to see it go.
The premise is basically a splice of life story with superpowers they call “psychs”. The main character Kotone can teleport anything she touches, and her to-be friend Nemuru can change the size of anything, including himself. Nemuru seeks out Kotone for a new member of the “Psych House”, a place for super powered individuals to live together and learn from each other. Its very chill, fun and an interesting take on superpowers.
*mild spoilers ahead*
As for the story itself, I think there was definitely more to it past the 17 chapters that I wish we could get. We’ll never find out Nemuru’s past, or anything else. I have a feeling the mangaka had more notice that the series would be canceled, because the ending was very smooth. Or maybe this was just a very well planned arc from the beginning. The whole sub-plot is that Kotone’s mother is in a coma. By the end, I won’t say what happens, but things get figured out, and it ends up being the main focus and the, I suppose completion of Kotone’s “backstory character arc”. That was completed by the time the series came to a close, with room to figure out a sort of aftermath. A satisfying ending.
*okay no more spoilers*
Overall, the concept was pretty simple: Super powered people living life with some shenanigans. The way it was presented was well done I think though. It felt fresh. The art style gave me Yotsuba&! vibes and as
pointed out, Zatch Bell as well. I think that sort of nostalgic vibe made me like the series more. That’s all I got for now. If you have the Shonen Jump app, give Psych House a whirl!
